Chinese everywhere know of the goddess Mazu. Temples have been constructed in honor of her for centuries and her story is legendary. Mazu is the Goddess of the Sea and she protects fishermen and communities near the ocean. The legend of Mazu dates back to over 1,000 years ago in the Xianliang Port of Meizhou Bay in Putian, Fujian Province. Lin Moniang, Mazu's real name, was an attractive young girl and was respected and well-liked by everyone in her village. Lin Moniang was also revered for her ability to forecast the weather. This gift was especially advantageous to the fishermen who fished the seas in the area. The young girl was capable of warning them of impending weather conditions and telling them if it was safe to go out to sea or if it would be best to stay in the port.
The legend of Mazu proclaims that after her death she went up to heaven and became an immortal. From heaven she watches over the seas and the people who travel on and across them. Because of this, over 100 million people worship her. In fact, there are more than 1,500 temples dedicated to her the world over. 900 of them are located in Taiwan. Wherever there is a Chinese community, there is a temple dedicated to Mazu.
世界各地的华人都知道妈祖这位女神。几世纪以来，都一直有人建造庙宇以纪念妈祖，而祂的故事已成传奇。妈祖是海神，保护渔民及沿海的村落。有关妈祖的传奇要追溯一千多年前福建省甫田县湄州湾的香良港。本名林默娘的妈祖，是一位美丽动人的少女，很受村里每个人的尊敬及爱戴。林默娘之所以受人尊敬也因祂有预测天气的能力。这个天赋对那些在本区海上捕鱼的渔民而言特别有利。默娘会就最近的天气状况向渔民警告，并告诉他们到海上作业是否安全抑或是否该留在港内为上策。
有关妈祖的传奇有这样的说法：祂过世后便升天成仙。祂从天上俯瞰海象与守护在海上航行的人。因此，崇拜祂的人超过一亿人。事实上，全球各地为祂建造的庙宇有一千五百多座。其中有九百座位于台湾。在任何有中国人的小区，就有妈祖庙。
语法重点：
1. 介绍关系副词 where 作连词的用法：
a. 一般而言，关系副词where多置表地方的名词之后，where 引导定语从句，修饰该名词，如下例：
This is the place where I first met my girlfriend, who become my wife two years later.
这就是我第一次与女朋友相见的地方，两年后她就成了我的妻子。
I went to Tokyo last month, where I bought a lot of English reference books.
上个月我到东京走了一趟，在那里我买了许多英文参考书。
b. where 亦可作复合关系副词，引导副词从句，置句首，修饰之后的主句，即：
where + 主语 + 动词+ 主句在……的地方，……
= In the place where +主语 + 动词+ 主句
请参看下列例句：
Where I live, there is a big department store.
= In the place where（in which） I live, there is a big department store.
在我住的地方，有一家很大的百货公司。
Where Peter lives, the air is fresh and the pace of life is slow.
= In the place where（in which） Peter lives, the air is fresh and the pace of life is slow.
在彼得所住的地方，空气清新，生活步调也很慢。
由上得知下列谚语即使用 where 作复合关系副词形成的：
Where there is a will, there is a way.
= In the place where（in which） there is a will, there is a way.
字面翻译：
在有意志力的地方就有一条出路。
实际翻译：
有志者事竟成。
Where there is life, there ishope.
= In the place where（in which） there is life, there is hope.
字面翻译：
在有生命的地方，就有希望。
实际翻译：
留得青山在，不怕没柴烧。
c. wherever 亦可视作复合关系副词，等于in any place where（在任何的地方），功能与where 一样，置句首，引导副词从句，修饰之后的主句。
Wherever there are human beings,there is pollution.
= In any place where（in which） there are human beings, there is pollution.
在任何有人住的地方，就有污染。（语气较强）
= Where there are human beings,there is pollution.
= In the place where（in which） there are human beings, there is pollution.
在有人住的地方，就有污染。（语气普通）
2. 由上得知，本课第二段最后一句即采用了 wherever 引导的副词从句如下：
Wherever there is a Chinese community, there is a temple (which is) dedicated to Mazu.
= In any place where（in which） there is a Chinese community, there is a temple dedicated to Mazu.
在任何有中国人的小区，就有信奉妈祖的庙。
3. wherever 亦可视作 no matter where（不论何处），一样引导副词从句，修饰主句。请参看下例：
Wherever you go, I'll follow you.
= No matter where you go, I'll follow you.
不论你到哪儿，我都会跟着你。
