　　1900年，即光绪二十六年，福建巡抚奏请在福建设置机铸铜元造币厂，以原来的福建省银元局为基础，命名为福建铜元局。后来，还先后建立了三个造币厂，用于铸造这种钱币。最开始的时候，发行的福建官局造光绪元宝只有三种面值，分别是当五文、当十文、当二十文。

福建官局造光绪元宝每枚当钱十文，铸造时间是光绪27年，也就是1901年，直到1912年才完全停止铸造。福建是继广东省局之后，较早开始铸造铜元的省份之一，不仅采用了和广东一样先进的设备、技术和币模，同时还更具特色。福建官局造光绪元宝每枚当钱十文的材质是红铜，极少部分采用紫铜，这一点是非常少见的。
