Starring Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott, Charlie’s Angels brings a new generation of fearless female detectives to the silver screen. A reboot of the original 1970s TV show and the 2000s film franchise, the 2019 version hits Chinese mainland cinemas on Nov 15.

“Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman, since its debut in the 1970s,” said the movie’s director, Elizabeth Banks, in a statement. “This film honors the legacy … while introducing a new era of modern, global Angels.”

The new Charlie’s Angels follows three women who fight crime with the guidance of their boss, Charlie. Elena Houghlin is an engineer. Jane Kano, a former spy, is the muscle of the group. And Sabina Wilson is a wild card.
新版《霹雳娇娃》讲述了三位女性在上司查理的指挥下打击犯罪的故事。爱莲娜·霍林是位工程师。曾经是特工的珍·卡诺是小队中的力量天使。而莎宾娜·威尔森则是一位全能手。
“Women can do anything” is the movie’s core message. “We don’t have to prove to you why they are who they are,” the director told Collider. “They’re just talented women who represent different archetypes of female characters.”

Houghlin, for example, is a talent who finds opportunities in a new area. It’s important to include “a female character who’s into science”, the film’s producer, Max Handelman, told the website. “She’s entering this world of the Charlie’s Angels, and she has no idea that this exists.”

Scott, who plays Houghlin in the film, said she liked the idea that anyone could be an Angel. “She may not be the most coordinated girl in the world, but she’s smart,” the actress told Collider.

Indeed, the director hopes her movie shows how women use their skills and intelligence. “The women in this film use their brains and their wits,” Banks told CNN. “We had a mantra which was ... ‘Fight smarter, not harder.’”

It’s been four decades since Charlie’s Angels debuted, and women are in a different place than they were. Without a doubt, this is a modern take on the franchise, whether you like the message of feminism or not.
