  大家好。我是主持人Laura。在今天的《TEENS战“疫”语言点》栏目中,我们将会谈到对抗新型冠状病毒最有效的一项措施。你能猜到它是什么吗?

Hello, everyone. I’m your host, Laura. In today’s episode of TEENS’ ANTI-VIRUS LANGUAGE TIPS, we will talk about one of the most effective measures in our fight against the novel coronavirus. Can you guess what it is?

  隔离。隔离是一种常用的方法,它通过让人们远离他人而阻止疾病的传播。这个词既可以作名词也可以作动词。例如,你可以说,她将会被隔离两周。还可以说,她至少要被隔离14天。

Quarantines. A quarantine is a method commonly used to keep a person away from others to stop a disease from spreading. The word can be used both as a noun or a verb. For example, you can say: “She will be put in quarantine for two weeks.” or “She has to be quarantined for at least 14 days.”

  隔离的另一种说法是单词“isolate”, 这个词表示让某人处于某地或者某种状态下以使其与他人隔离。例如,每个返回北京的人都被要求自我隔离14天。或者说,这位病人需要再隔离两周。

Another way to talk about quarantines is to use the word “isolate”, which means to put someone in a place or situation that is separate from others. For example, “Everyone returning to Beijing would be required to isolate themselves for 14 days” or “This patient needs to be in isolation for another two weeks".

  隔离一词来自于“quarantina giorni”, 这是意大利语,意思是40天。在十四世纪,一场名为黑死病的鼠疫袭击了欧洲并消灭了欧洲几乎三分之一的人口。

The word quarantine comes from quarantina giorni, which is the Italian translation of 40 days. In the 14th century, a plague called the Black Death hit Europe and wiped out almost one-third of Europe’s population.

  为了保护沿海城市不受致命疾病的侵袭,当时的威尼斯政府要求来自受感染地区港口的船只在海上抛锚停泊40天后才能登陆。

In an effort to protect coastal cities from the deadly disease, the government of Venice asked the ships from infected ports to sit at anchor for 40 days before landing.

  从那以后,几百年来隔离措施一直被用来防止疾病的扩散。在中国,《传染病防治法》于1989年通过,并于2013年得到最新修订。该项法律赋予了政府权力,通过隔离人群来阻止传染病的输入和传播。

Since then, quarantines have been used to prevent the spread of disease for hundreds of years. In China, the Law on Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases was passed in 1989 and recently revised in 2013. The law gives the government authority to quarantine people to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases.

  中国的公共卫生应对措施被证明有效阻止了新型冠状病毒的传播。中国的努力为世界各国采取积极的防控措施争取了宝贵的时间。

China’s public health responses have proven to be effective in blocking the novel coronavirus from spreading. Its efforts have bought precious time for countries around the world to take active prevention and control measures.
