Ex 76ers GM Billy King: "When AI was injured & we knew he couldn’t play we used to hide his jersey. We’d lock it. One time he found his jersey but didn’t have any shoes. He tried to send the ball boy to the Foot Locker. Then he pointed to an attendant, ‘what size are you, just give me those shoes’"

Imagine he just bought his own jersey instead XD
Just pop on into the team store lmao
Not a bad idea honestly
He would be signing autographs all night. Lol
Not if he wore a beanie, sunglasses and sweater. AI was a pretty normal sized guy, he's one of the only NBA players in history who could hide in a crowd
Lol, there's no way prime AI would go unrecognized in a Sixers store built into the Sixers arena patronized entirely by Sixers fans on game day
[–]EastDubstep_Caruso 102 指標 14小時前
I'm sure they could get him a fake mustache
That wouldn't be enough. He'd have to put on The Fiend mask to make sure nobody could identify him.
This is philly. They don't work
I saw AI at a club in atlanta once. He's average height but his arms are long af and his swag is kinda unmistakable lol.
[–]Trail Blazerstonfx 19
Oh my gosh it's my favourite point guard, Chris Paul! Chris Paul man, wassup man?
He allegedly tried that once, was being held out of a game in New York and started heading out to just buy his own jersey from the NBA Flagship store a mile away before getting put back in
I don't know how people can't love this guy. I always did.

I understand that if the Chauncey trade never happened, I'd love him.

My first basketball memories were trying to recreate AI dribbles moves with my buddies. In Indiana during the Reggie era

AI walks in store
Foot Locker employee: YOOOO I KNOW YOU, YOU’RE AI RIGHT
Foot locker employee: what do you want, my dude?!?
AI: I want a Philly Allen Iverson home jersey
Foot locker employee: um, what? wouldn’t you have that already?
AI: yes, but I need one right now
Foot locker employee: ummmm...okay bro
AI: I want a Philly Allen Iverson home jersey
Foot locker employee: Hey yall! I've got Andre Iguodala buying me some Iverson stuff!
Absolute legend and the only reason I started loving basketball
You picked a damn good reason for loving basketball that's for sure.
[–]Raptorsrelapsze 11
Wasn't he responsible for that outbreak of velour suits though?

As a 10-year old white European kid, I bought (well, with my parent's money) a Sixers snapback because of AI.
Sucks that it is not size-adjustable
Iverson was pound for pound the toughest player in NBA history. He always played with injuries and doesn't get nearly enough credit as he deserves.💪🏾
I remember the "who is most dominant player in the League" debates between him and Shaq during his MVP season.
People will point to his true shooting percentage and tell me he’s overrated. He is a true warrior and was better than Kobe before 2005 in my biased opinion
[–]Mavericks_tx 401 指標 17小時前
AI made the 76ers watchable for years. Those guys need to stfu.
Dude carried a team to the finals that had Aaron McKie and a 35-year old Mutumbo as the next two best scorers.

Put some respek on Eric Snow & Matt Geiger's name!
Haven’t heard a Matt Geiger reference in years 😂. Shaq destroyed that man effortlessly.

I was in first grade and asked my dad why can't any of the other grown men stop him. My dad had no answer.
Yeah that shit made no sense when you’d watch it live. How in the hell is he treating grown men like children I asked myself in amazement. It was Mutombo ffs surely he can’t dominate him I thought. But he did anyway.

I think Kobe once said something like "we're all fortunate that Allen Iverson isn't 6' 5""
If Iverson was around the same size as MJ or Kobe than you’re easily talking about AI as being a top 5 player all time.
I see these comments somewhat regularly, about if "only AI was taller", but there's a relationship between size and speed (quickness is a better word than speed actually) governed by the laws of physics. And Iverson was damn good because he was quicker than anyone else on the court. And he was quicker because he was shorter.
Yeah, a 6'5" Iverson would have been a top 5 all time, but that's because 6'5" guys don't have his quickness. It's just how it works. His size is part of what made him special, it's not really possible to consider his skill level without it.
6'5" guys don't have his quickness
i've only seen one guy like that and his name is russell westbrook
Nba was different like pre-2010 ish. Volume scoring wasn't considered a bad thing if you won. Guys like Kobe, McGrady and AI all were ball dominant guards that essentially had to do it all. Those guys were willing to sacrifice their bodies in order to keep playing.
That was their role as either being the guy on their team or only have another co star to help them. It's easy to use efficiency stats when guys are just teaming up nowadays. Stars had their own teams back then and were competitively going at it.
Stars had their own teams back then and were competitively going at it
That was right when i started following the NBA, it was Tmac for Orlando, AI for the Philly, Kobe/Shaq for LA, Duncan for SA, etc etc. Imo it was simpler times.
[–][TOR] Amir JohnsonIanicRR 110
AI is one of those players you needed to watch in real time to truly understand the hype. The numbers don’t tell a full story for the heart he brought on the court.
I agree. Kobe is similar in that regard.
[–]Tvveaking 42
I think Russ' fits the AI build more than Kobe. Kobe actually had pretty good efficiency based on his era (shocking based on what so many causals say) he was much more versatile defensively. Russ is this generations "leave it all on the line" undersized warrior. both are going to be forever criticized and have false narratives thrown on their legacies for not winning a ring and its a damn shame for both.
[–]Thunderrabidbot 11
God I hope Russ can get a ring one day. Even being the sixth man or something. Just don’t want to spend the last 40 years of my life telling people he was amazing and they can suck a dick .
I've been back and forth on Russ, mostly sympathetic, but I've come to the realization that the only reason his arguable weaknesses are in the spotlight is his undisputable amount of talent and power.
I mean he was trying to score on a lane with basically 4 centers (2 of his, 2 on D) since that’s what late 90s/early 00s PFs were. He had no shooting for a lot of his career and no system designed around spacing.
If you put him in today’s league he probably shoots more 3s and shoots them better since he’d have worked on them more in his off seasons as well.
Plenty to criticize about his game but context matters a lot.
Whenever anyone brings up his TS% or any efficiency related stat it just tells me they weren't watching basketball when he was in his prime.
That team's entire offensive gameplan was to give AI the ball and have him iso. And he brought them to the finals. A team that plays like those 76ers should never be competitive, but he made them great.
Yep you can't just roll out stats and convince he's an inefficient player like AI. There has to be context esp when AI's job was to handle the offense on his own, Same way Kobe did with the 06 Lakers. There was no choice otherwise their teams would be HOT ASS.
Always love when the 16 years old in r/nba talk about how inefficient and overrated The Answer was.
16 yr olds don't even know who "The Answer" is
They just weren't there man. This gen doesn't have any1 that has that swagger and presence like AI.
To be fair, much like Shaq, if you didn't experience Iverson as it happened...then you just can't understand
