　　ancient

　　古代的;古老的;很老的

　　People have lived here since ancient times.

　　自古以来人们就住在这里。

　　Many modern festivals can be traced back to an ancient past.

　　许多现代节日都可以追溯到古代。

　　We were most impressed by the ruins of an ancient building.

　　我们对一座古建筑的遗迹印象最深。

　　The ancient Chinese civilization is one of the oldest in the world.

　　中国古代文明是世界上最古老的文明之一。

　　The best fuel of the ancients was wood.

　　古代人最好的燃料是木头。

　　The ancients believed that the sun and moon were planets.

　　主要区别

　　old和ancient单就含义而言，它们看起来可能一样，都能表示“古老的”，但实际上这两个词有所不同。

　　表示“史前的”或“最早的，古代文明时期的” 的意思，一般都用ancient。

　　与现在（modern）相对应的古代两个都可以，如下面两个句子：

　　This old Silk Road linked China with the West in ancient times.

　　这条古老的丝绸之路在古代把中国和西方连接起来。

　　In old times people had a theory that the world was flat.

　　在过去，人们有一种理论认为世界是平的。

　　但是，形容几十年前，甚至几百年前，还是别用ancient了。

　　old可以指人的年龄，或建筑物等物体的年代久远；ancient不用来指年龄，经常用来指古代是建筑物等物体。

　　That old temple is hidden among trees.

　　那座古刹掩映在树林里。

　　That ancient temple looked well cared for.

　　那座古刹看起来保存完好。
